Why does Canada need a military?

Canada is rich in resources and a prime target for countries such as China or the United States. Iceland does have a military and up till 2006 it was the U.S. military and some other NATO forces. Now it's mostly non U.S. NATO forces although Iceland has been forced to have its own troops. The same thing could happen to Canada.
