Cashing a minors settlement check?

I need to rephrase my question. Because my son has a lot of needs; i need to know if its illegal to cash his settlement check instead of putting it in a trustee account. The only reason why I'm asking is because he can really use the money now rather than waiting until he's 18. He's 11 now.
