as long as the pulley is still moving you should be ok. most likey the clutch on the compressor was burning up. just dont use the a/c like you said. BUT make sure the belt is still properly moving around the a/c compressor. if it is stuck you may smell something burnng and then it breaks. leaving you with no power steering and sometimes no coolant or coolant fan. which will cause you to overheat.
